Stormwater Analysis

1. Arrange for students to take a trip to a nearby pond, creek or lake to gather water samples and test for pollutants. If a trip is not possible, have the students bring various water samples to class, including one of common tap water. Instruct the students to perform tests on each sample and determine which is most free of pollutants.

2. Assign students to follow as best they can the route of runoff from their neighborhoods after the next rain. Have them draw a diagram/map to show where the water goes and to calculate how fast it gets there. Also have them itemize possible pollution sources as the runoff water travels its course.

3. Arrange for a stormwater management specialist to visit the classroom to explain how your city is affected by stormwater runoff.
